A new study of cloud collaboration and communication reveals that 2016 can be expected to provide a makeover for enterprise communication, with an emphasis on collaboration tools, telephony setups, and mobility models.

The survey, conducted by tech services company Azzurri communications and market research firm Redshift Research, showed that 93 per cent of enterprises have used a collaboration tool and that 69 per cent have used multiple collaboration tools, with 29 per cent having used at least four.

This number is expected to rise even further, with 41 per cent of enterprises planning to spend even more on collaboration tools this year. All collaboration tool categories will likely see growth in usage. The categories anticipated to see the highest increases are presence and instant messaging (IM) tools, enterprise social networking, and phone-based conferencing services.

In the telephony category, unified communications (UC) is catching up with Internet Protocol (IP) or traditional phone system (PBX) usage, which at present is attracting 62 per cent of the market.

The cloud is set to explode in 2016. On-site UC usage is expected to fall by over one third within the next year, with cloud-based US usage rising from 6 per cent of UC to 28 per cent.
